The Navajo Generating Station is essential to the Navajo and Hopi communities. Approximately 750 people, mostly Native Americans, work at the plant and Kayenta Mine that supplies it when the facilities are fully operational. The tribe benefits from lease payments, coal royalties, and myriad ancillary transactions, such as selling power to the mine. This panel will address recent developments with the mine and whether re-opening this power plant is a good or bad move politically, legally, economically, socially, and environmentally.
